COMMUNITY REVIEWS

Atlantis submitted by Jen Chapin-Smith on June 18, 2014, 9:46pm "Stargate Atlantis" remains one of my favorite science fiction TV series and the great episodes continue in its second season. This season continues with the crew investigating more plants and societies.

A spin-off of "Stargate SG-1" (1999-2007, starring Richard Dean Anderson, Amanda Tapping, Christopher Judge and Michael Shanks), this series is closer to a sci fi Swiss Family Robinson. I was sad that the series had only five seasons, but it told a great story during that time.

The series began when Earth scientists have discovered a wormhole through the stargate to take people farther than ever before: to the Pegasus Galaxy. Because it requires enormous amounts of energy to travel such a distance, only a limited crew with limited supplies can go and they will likely never return. Not knowing anything about the area, the Earth citizens unwittingly awaken a predatory upon the galaxy, a mistake that will haunt them for years. By season two they have made alliances and enemies of various local political entities.

Filmed in Canada, the series has a fairly diverse cast, including three actors of color, several strong female characters and actors playing characters from numerous Earth nations. We also have some Pegasus natives to round out the group. "Game of Thrones" fans will recognize Jason Momoa, who plays Ronon Dex in "Stargate." "Firefly" fans will also recognize Jewell Staite.
