Read it for the Writing submitted by Slavewoman on November 25, 2007, 9:05am I wanted the story to end differently. It was well written and interesting, and if you're paying attention, you can figure out "whodunnit" about half-way into the book. The back story is the one that is the most hauting, and pulls the reader along, but it never gets resolved, which is very frustrating. This could have been explosive and satisfying, but the author chose to take a different path.

Loved the story, loved the writing submitted by debbifs on August 6, 2010, 11:29am Beautifully written, great characters, important themes, and an ending I found both satisfying and inevitable.

For what it's worth, I'm glad I didn't read the review by Slavewoman before reading the book as I would have been very sad to have a key piece of the ending revealed. (You may want to mark that review as having a spoiler.)

GREAT MYSTERY! submitted by bookher on July 25, 2012, 4:51pm I've really enjoyed Tana French's 3 books and find it very unique and refreshing how she keeps all the same characters in the books but changes the focus to a different main character in each one. I always love a mystery writer who writes un-guessable endings.

couldn't put it down submitted by airgood on August 1, 2014, 1:14pm I loved this book and read it non-stop until the end! It was thrilling and sort of creepy at parts. The writing and story are fantastic.

Well written submitted by scarrieliz on August 5, 2014, 8:37am I enjoy Tana French's writing and could not put this book down.

Can't put it down submitted by steveiew on June 24, 2016, 2:09pm Great thriller that kept me wanting to read more. I was upset with the ending but it was still worth the read.

Worth the read submitted by suttonp on July 25, 2017, 2:50pm I both loved and was disappointed by this book. I love the writing and the well crafted story. I also love that I amost don't care that the author didn't resolve all the questions.

A bit disappointing submitted by lcaitday on June 16, 2018, 5:06pm I've heard such great things about this book that I had too high of hopes. The beginning was as good as people said, great writing, solid characters and an interesting murder to investigate. But as you hit the middle of the book the plot starts to drag out, the most intriguing story line is dropped and the protagonist becomes insufferable. I also didn't like the twist which was super frustrating. I'll probably give one of French's other books a try to see if I it's a problem with her writing or if I just picked the wrong book.

Fast pace but hard read submitted by Jinxyluis on July 23, 2018, 9:24am I flew through this book but I found the resolution so sad and somewhat frustrating, but I also appreciated it.

tough read submitted by laurenalysse on August 17, 2018, 11:05am this was a tough read, but worth it. the story can be upsetting, keep that in mind knowing the general summary of the plot. the ending felt a little unresolved, but maybe understandable given the nature. I did not find the narrator very likable.

Series If You Want submitted by gwenenelson on June 20, 2019, 2:34pm Such a great mystery series...! The next books by Tana French can be read as a series or not. Very enjoyable and kept the reader guessing.

Good until the end submitted by Sonia on July 29, 2019, 6:12pm This book had a captivating and interesting story line, but the ending was very disappointing.

Couldn’t put down submitted by annikajoyce on August 27, 2020, 3:48pm I loved this book. Reading it was such a pleasure— the plot twists, the character development... however, I do agree with other reviewers about the end. It left me looking for more but not in a good way...

first in a loosely-connected series submitted by camelsamba on August 28, 2020, 3:11pm I requested this book after I heard an interview with the author on NPR. but by the time I got it, I no longer remembered what aspect intrigued me. It's a police procedural murder mystery, rather dark and sinister but with many elegantly written passages. It's not my usual fare, but I'm glad I listened to it. It is the first in the "Dublin Murder Squad" series. Each book in the series revolves around a different detective, sometimes loosely connecting to one of the others. Once you get started, you may end up reading/listening to all of them.

In the Woods submitted by maywang on June 26, 2021, 3:47pm Excellent book. Couldn't put it down. Everything is amazing about this, you're missing out if you haven't touched this yet.

Disturbing but interesting submitted by CarolSeidl on June 29, 2021, 9:01pm This book is a pretty dense, hard read. It contains some pretty upsetting topics, but it is very well written. It is an exciting mystery filled with dark twists.

a flawless mystery writer and one of her best submitted by rincess on August 8, 2022, 11:51am Tana French may be one of the most skilled mystery authors I have ever read-- this one pulled me in and kept me in its arms until the end-- i also find her humor laugh out loud at times, so its a good mix when you listen to it on audiobook or if you're reading-- appreciate how this series follows its characters in different way and glad to have started w this novel.
