Olive is a little girl who dreams of winning the Little Miss Sunshine contest. Her family wants her dream to come true, but they are so dysfunctional that they can barely make it through a day without some disaster befalling them. Olive's father, Richard, is unsuccessful as a motivational speaker. He is barely on speaking terms with Olive's mother. Her uncle Frank has attempted suicide following an unsuccessful romance with a male graduate student. Her brother Dwayne, a fanatical follower of Nietzsche, has taken a vow of silence. And Olive's grandfather is a loser with a drug habit, but at least he enthusiastically coaches Olive in her contest talent routine. Circumstances conspire to put the entire family on the road together with the goal of getting Olive to the Little Miss Sunshine contest in California.

Hilarious! submitted by kelleyc on July 8, 2016, 8:10am It's a unique type of funny but absolutely gut-busting.

heartbreakingly uplifting! a must watch! submitted by pmheard on June 1, 2023, 11:58am i put this off forever because the trailer seemed like it was going to be just another cringy trope, but boy was i wrong. it was genuinely so much more than that; it was heartwarming and equally as heartbreaking, an authentic slice of life that addressed and empathized with the messy, normal parts of growing and the familial system. of course everyone’s family is different, with their own flavors of drama and trauma, but this never pretended to be picturesque. from the jump we were shown the raw layer of things, a family caught in the moments hidden from the public eye. mental health struggles, bickering, irritancy, sarcasm, distaste, intolerance, and so much more. all the “bad” was showcased in its honest form. it may not resonate with you entirely personally, situation to situation, but for the most part we were able to get the overall message; it’s acceptable and expected to not be perfect nor beautiful nor agreeable nor socially acceptable, or anything else in any realm of life because it’s just not fucking realistic! humans are error prone and scrambled and imperfect.

in a period of my life when i was being especially reminded of my family dynamic, connections, and issues, this film reminded me that i am not alone. truly, it reminded me that dysfunction is far more common than universally acknowledged. so, for the first time in a long time, i felt seen. and if even just by a film, i think that’s just what i needed. definitely has earned itself a spot amongst my favorites.

(there’s much more to dissect here including, but not limited to, queer & autistic coding, aging generations, the culture of academia, patriarchal marital dynamics, the sexualization of children via beauty pageants, and MUCH more. i acknowledge the intricacy and i do LOVE to write (you should see my journal), but i simply cannot get into all that without writing a novel, so this will have to suffice! i’m happy to be back writing these long ass reviews though, and if you made it to the end then cheers!)

I liked this movie submitted by sara on June 29, 2023, 7:01am I liked this movie, and I don’t like many movies. If you are on the edge, go ahead and watch it.
