COMMUNITY REVIEWS

Bernstein's Final Revised Version of Candide submitted by vk on March 11, 2011, 7:22pm This DVD contains what Leonard Bernstein called his "final revised version" of his operetta Candide, videotaped at the London Barbican Centre in December 1989, less than a year before his death. In this concert, as expected, his music shines brilliantly, even overwhelming the credulity-stretching libretto. It also contains a video prologue and epilogue from the composer as well as a printed insert "Bernstein and Voltaire" by narrative collaborator John Wells, explaining what Bernstein wanted in this final revised version. Some consider this version definitive. Leonard Bernstein fans should not miss this DVD. Highly recommended.
