listen and find out submitted by manz on December 13, 2010, 10:17am This is one of my favorite books. And it is the book that made me think "okay, BOCDs that aren't by David Sedaris aren't so bad afterall." I love the voice, the stories, the memories, and it is HILARIOUS. Check this book out now, and listen to it twice, and then tell your mom and your BFF to read it.

I read this submitted by tbbrown76 on July 2, 2014, 8:14pm while on a treadmill and almost fell off. It is fun, funny and hearkens you back to a simpler time. But, out of the blue he drops an unnecessary F-bomb. Be warned. It seems to be a consistent quirk of his. Just once. Out of the blue.

So good on audio submitted by jmb.mlis on June 26, 2018, 2:36pm Such a funny and relatable book - even better on audio!

Read by the author, and what a pleasure! submitted by lmangus on July 26, 2021, 11:39am The book is laugh-out-loud funny so often, it's dangerous if you are reading in a place where "quiet" is needed/expected, or listening during dinner food prep chopping veggies/etc! The stories are of his childhood, intermittently filled in with historical details of the time, where the nostalgic perspective is a kid seeing everything as "the best, brightest, loveliest, most beautiful, tastiest," and on. His descriptions are often mesmerizing, drawing you into his fantastical child-view of his world, and the world at large. The adults are mainly exaggerated (as is everything when you are a kid) caricatures that make you think of the "when I was a kid, we did x/y/z and we turned out fine" isms we often hear and wonder if that is MAYBE a bit of a stretch. Some authors aren't the best at narrating their own words/books. Bryson is fantastic, his own hesitations and enthusiasm delivered with glee (or defeat) in such a way, you feel you are in that friend-circle he shares these tales from his latest adventure with.
