Kind of Emo? submitted by Meginator on August 24, 2020, 10:43pm This album lacks some of the band’s previous energy and innovative spirit, but the pop-punk core of their sound remains intact, anchored by the inimitable vocal style. The best tracks sound like more carefully considered, more deliberately crafted versions of their older work, for better and worse; surprisingly for the genre, some of the stronger tracks here are ballads. Though the album could do with a signature barnstormer and a bit more liveliness (it strays into a mid-00s emo mode that doesn’t really fit the band’s talents), it’s a good representation of the ways that an inherently youthful genre can evolve along with its pioneers.
