Great Kids' Audio Series submitted by crazypockets on June 28, 2012, 9:07am I remember loving this series as a kid, so I thought it'd be fun to pick it up to listen to on my commute. It was just as great a story as I remembered, and I particularly enjoyed listening to it being read by the author in her British accent. Sometimes when authors read their own work, it falls flat. Not so with Ms. Banks who was an actress and television journalist before becoming a writer. She calls on the full range of her acting skills to deliver a great performance with different voices and spot-on inflection. The only complaint I have is with her voice for the character Little Bull (American readers will remember him as "Little Bear"). At first I was concerned that the portrayal might be a bit racist, and I'm still not totally unconvinced. But that would be so out of keeping with the general theme of the story, not to mention every idea the author portrays throughout, that I think maybe it's just more her muddled attempt at a "tough, slightly-American sounding voice" than a stereotypical to the point of offensive American Indian voice. I would still very much recommend this audio series for a great summer family car trip choice. Adults will like it just as much as kids will.

We also enjoy them more when the reader is British, because for whatever reason, we, the parents, are able to tune their words out completely. So this hits all the marks. Banks is a compelling author, even if the characterization of "cowboys" and "indians" here is antiquated. Sometimes, the personification of the "Indian" toy does make me cringe, I have to wonder what conscious, empathic update to this story might be.
