Writing is 5-star
submitted by Susan4Pax -prev. sueij- on August 13, 2013, 9:47pm
It's incredibly hard for me to figure out how to rate this book. The writing is absolutely, positively, without-a-doubt 5 stars. I can't remember the last time I read a book and had so many times that I read something and laughed out loud, or said to somebody in the room, "Hey, hey! You have GOT to hear this!" and then read them a section.
Perry can deliver like nobody's business.
What didn't work for me was that a lot of the content of the book was about gardening, cooking, and the nuts-and-bolts of fixing his old International truck, and none of these really hold my interest. If he had happened to be waxing on about topics that were of more intrinsic appeal to me, then I would absolutely have given this book a higher rating. As it stands, though, I wouldn't pick it up again simply because of that mismatch.
I gotta tell you, though, that the first third of the book definitely reminded me of something. You know the dog from the movie Up? The one with the collar that translated his thoughts into English. He'd be talking to a human and suddenly -- SQUIRREL!
Yeah. Well, if that dog wrote a book, I'm pretty sure he'd be Michael Perry (I say with a smile). It's especially true early in the book, but you think you're reading about gardening and then suddenly -- SQUIRREL (or cookbook! or NPR names! or whatever the distraction of the moment may be) He uses it to great effect, though, and those were often the passages that had me laughing and saying to the people around me, "Hey, listen to this one...."
It's a lot of fun to read, and most of our book club gave it a big thumbs up. If I ever catch up on my reading pile, I would definitely give others of his books a chance.
