Selkies submitted by Jen Chapin-Smith on August 21, 2013, 6:18pm "The Secret of Roan Inish" centers around the Celtic legends of selkies, which are usually defined as seals who can disguise themselves as humans, but sometimes defined as Celtic mermaids.

Fiona lives on the west coast of Ireland, but family difficulties cause her to go live with her grandparents and her cousin Eamon near the island of Roan Inish, where the selkies are rumored to reside and where their family used to live but was forced to leave. On the day of the evacuation from Roan Inish a wave pulled Fiona's baby brother's cradle out to sea and he has been missing ever since. Fiona and Eamon visit their ancestral island and spot a child. Have the selkies been raising the baby all this time on the abandoned island?

A heartwarming tale that blends magic with everyday Irish life, "The Secret of Roan Inish" is based on the novel "The Secret of Ron Mor Skerry" by Rosalie K. Fry. Fry set the story in Scotland, but the Irish film board paid for the production of the movie.
