COMMUNITY REVIEWS

Expired Peanuts submitted by Caser on November 26, 2010, 2:23pm Important to note that this movie was originally released in 1969, when apparently it was acceptable for a film directed at a youth audience to portray scene after scene of kids being unrelentingly mean toward the most sympathetic character. Are we to be amused when Lucy makes fun of the size of Charlie Brown's body, saying, "These slides show your tendency toward fatness. Look at that gut! Even your nose is fat, and your legs. Why, I bet if the truth were known, even your toes are fat." Or when she shows him numerous slides of his varied and sundry failures, and then takes a relatively tame prank like pulling the football out on him to expound to him what failure he is in life. Later, a group of girls from school gangs up on him, calling him stupid for entering the spelling bee.

I got this DVD for a bit of nostalgia, for I remember the other Peanuts movies being cute and uplifting, but in A Charlie Brown Christmas, the titular character's friends lack the malice and pettiness that Lucy and others have in this movie. Everyone watching it with me was so depressed that we had to turn it off after 20 minutes. I'm sure in the end that Charlie would come off the better person for winning the spelling bee and shrugging off all of the demeaning insults these supposedly cute, friendly characters threw at him, but I left feeling like the creators were saying that the fuzzy, jazzy, colorful world of Peanuts was just a veil for the hostility and worthlessness at the base of humanity.
