Excellent submitted by amym on August 19, 2014, 12:35pm Louise Penny's books are more than just mysteries. They have thoughtful descriptions of friendship and grief. The characters are all painted in shades of grey - nobody is purely evil or completely good. Very nuanced, good book.

GREAT submitted by nadeensukhon on August 29, 2014, 12:17pm Great book, highly recommended

Excellent submitted by suttonp on June 19, 2017, 8:17am This is a thought provoking mystery. It is atmospheric as well as cozy;not an easy thing to accomplish. Louise Penny is an outstanding author who can always be counted on to make me want more. Most highly recommended!

Beautiful submitted by lballard on July 2, 2018, 5:12am This is a wonderful cozy mystery which not only gives a sense of place, but also has a number of characters with whom it’s a pleasure spending time. Her main character is such a good person.

A satisfying mystery submitted by teri on August 11, 2018, 3:38pm The first book of a great series. A blend of history, mystery, and just enough foodie descriptions to make you hungry - all set in a charming fictional village in Canada. The movie version (Still Life - A Three Pines Mystery, 2014) is also worth watching.

Disappointed submitted by CarolSeidl on January 23, 2021, 12:30am I've heard many people talk about how much they enjoy Inspector Gamache and the entire series by Louise Penny. I must admit that I'm not a big fan of mysteries. I once was but books in this genre typically don't interest me much anymore. Nevertheless, I occasionally come upon mysteries that I appreciate and given the hype surrounding this series, I thought Still Life would deliver.

I would have been happy to read a different book in the series but a couple of friends, as well as reviews I'd read online, recommended that I start with the first. I can't imagine how this book has received as many good reviews as it has. The story is plodding and implausible, many of the characters are poorly developed, the humor is juvenile at many points, and the writing rudimentary.

I kept wanting to quit and cut my losses but since friends' were interested in hearing my opinion, I forged on. I'm not sure I'm glad I did but I'm glad it's over. Au revoir Inspector Gamache et bon débarras!

Excellent submitted by maywang on June 11, 2021, 3:27pm Good book! Deserves to be acclaimed.

Excellent mystery submitted by ilenekroll on July 24, 2021, 7:31pm This whole series of book is amazing. My book club has read several.

I would of never guessed the ending of this mystery. I love this book!

Amazing book submitted by desuka81 on July 26, 2021, 9:17pm The book is so great to read

I get the hype submitted by bcartm01 on June 17, 2022, 11:34pm I finally picked up the first in this series to read and I enjoyed it! The ending surprised me, which I love, and it was really pleasant to relax and read. I think I’ll read the next in the series!

not overrated submitted by AnnieKelly on July 10, 2022, 9:37am I loved the whole series!

Beautiful picture! submitted by elenalibro on July 1, 2023, 9:32pm This book portrays a profound picture of human feelings, thoughts, reflections. All descriptions, of characters, places, emotions are so deep that one feels to have visited the Tree Pines village and talked with all the people there. The writing style is captivating. Excellent book!

A good mystery submitted by JennJenn on July 3, 2023, 6:42am In this book, even the characters who are dead, come alone with Penny's portrayal of them. This booked sucked me in from the beginning and kept me engaged all the way through.

A Good Start to a Great Series submitted by adimarzo on July 29, 2023, 3:49pm This is the first in the Inspector Gamache series of mysteries set in a small town outside of Montreal. I wouldn't call this book a "cozy mystery" as some have said. It is a bit darker and deeper than what I think of as a "cozy mystery." This first installment is a good introduction to the town and the characters but not the best example of the author's work. Keep reading - I think the books get better further into the series.
