COMMUNITY REVIEWS

A great series submitted by anonymous on January 2, 2009, 11:59am Fullmetal Alchemist is one of those series that tends to defy categorization. The show has elements of fantasy, gothic horror, drama, and quirky humor. The animation quality and the music are fantastic, and all of the characters look very distinct and unique from one another, an excellent rare quality in anime. The characters are also very engaging in that they are dynamic and actually grow and change as the story progresses.

The series starts off seeming appropriate for all audiences, but the later episodes can be very dark and serious in tone and subject matter, so this isn't necessarily a good choice for young kids. I would estimate that it is around a PG-13 audience level. One of the central themes of the show is sacrifice, giving up something to obtain something else, and the viewer is immediately introduced to this philosophy in the opening credits;

"Humankind cannot gain anything without first giving something in return. To obtain, something of equal value must be lost. That is alchemy's First Law of Equivalent Exchange. In those days, we really believed that to be the world's one, and only, truth."

Enjoy!
