COMMUNITY REVIEWS

Gorgeous idyll - highly recommended submitted by mstrasma on August 2, 2015, 9:48pm This is a beautiful, romantic, intelligent, humorous, and very enjoyable adaptation of Hardy's book (which I hadn't read, but then did after seeing this). The two young lead characters have more depth than in the original, and the romantic storyline is more central than in the book. This is all to the good, but the choir's storyline also shines in this version. Hardy wrote for largely urban, literate audiences; the same is certainly true for the BBC in the 21st c., but the nostalgia for the pre-industrial revolution, rural way of life, that had already nearly disappeared in Hardy's time, holds perhaps even more appeal now.
