Entertaining sequel submitted by marielle on July 6, 2011, 1:34am Temeraire is not just any dragon- he's an imperial dragon, which can only be ridden by Chinese royalty. And they want him back.

This is a sequel to His Majesty's Dragon. It's not as good as the first, of course, but it was passable. The bulk of this novel is spent as a sea journey which, while it accurately reflects the length it would have taken, does some disservice to the dramatic narrative. The sea journey part of the book simply drags, while most of the movement of the book occurs at the beginning and end of the book, which are far too short.

Still, the conclusion was enjoyable and I am planning to read the next book in the series.

Deepening The Dragon World submitted by Fevvers - STAR473 on August 8, 2014, 12:47am This is the third book of the Temeraire series. It gets there in a convoluted fashion, but it drastically opens up the world on multiple levels. We follow the characters from the Napoleonic War-torn Europe to a diplomatic mission to China. It reveals that dragons are treated very differently in China than they have been in Western Europe, giving both the readers and the characters - both human and dragon - some new things to ponder. The previous book dragged some for me, but this one regained my attention.

A Fun Series submitted by betsywil on July 30, 2016, 3:32pm This is a fun series.
Think Jane Austen meets Horatio Hornblower - plus dragons.

But you should really start with the first novel - His Majesty's Dragon.
AADL no longer has a copy (at the time of this review) so you will need to use MELCAT or other Interlibrary Loan - or listen to AADL's book on CD.

Enjoy!

Caught me up in the story submitted by Susan4Pax -prev. sueij- on July 15, 2017, 8:32pm I thoroughly enjoyed the second book of the Temeraire series and am solidly hooked on the 9 book series. It reimagines the Napoleonic Wars... with dragons. There's a lot of detail and historical context, which might weigh some down, but I thought it was well done and handled in a way that allowed the story to keep moving. I love that each book moves the story forward with almost no repeating of the material from the previous stories. _Throne of Jade_ moves the story across the ocean to China. The journey takes more of the book than it seems could be told in an interesting way, but held me nonetheless. The part set in China was wonderful.

This kind of historic war-setting and battle-retelling isn't generally my "thing," but Novik does such a great job bringing the world and the characters to life that I am quite caught up in it.

My new favorite series! submitted by BurntSaori on June 15, 2019, 2:46pm Better than the first book! Captain Laurence and Temeraire brave the 7 month voyage from England to China, will they be forced apart? Will they even make it there in one piece? I was on the edge of my seat.
