Great for learning, but not my kind of book

What it's got going for it: it's well written. The author investigates and experiences many, many different sides of life in China. He does a great job of mixing personal stories with historical perspective. The book is both informative and readable.
What doesn't work for me: I just prefer narrative. For most of this book, each new chapter is about something new. Eventually two thin narrative lines emerge (his friend Polat and Chen Mengjia/the oracle bones), but it's just not as much as I like in a book.
I learned a ton about China, both past and present. If you're interested in one of the world's most important nations, definitely put this on your to-read list.
