COMMUNITY REVIEWS

Ridiculousness! submitted by jaegerla on November 14, 2011, 9:44am While making a list on how to be a better conversationalist I came across this title. We could all use a little help when it comes to communicating with our moms and it seemed like the premise of this was to bridge that gap. I explain all this because I'm embarrassed to have checked this out.

This had good points and bad points.

Good points: Tannen is able to break down and categorize female methods of communication. There are many patterns in discussion between moms and daughters that everyone participates in but is not aware of. For example, when a mother makes a comment on one of her daughter's decisions, it carries a huge impact because it causes the daughter to reflect on all of the implications of that comment. If it is positive, it means their connection and her mother's opinion on her as a whole is positive. If the comment is even remotely negative, the "metamessage" is that their connection is unstable and her mother's opinion on her as a whole is negative. The tone of a conversation between a mom and daughter can change in the blink of an eye if the daughter perceives her mother's opinion of her to be negative in any way, and she may verbally retaliate. This book pointed out many patterns like this.

Bad points: This will probably make you cry at some point about a fight you've had with your mom. No one is immune to this. The book covers every kind of conflict. And it did make me cry while driving around town. Keep that in mind before you pop it in before a long drive. Ridiculousness!
