What caused Dry Falls? submitted by amy on July 21, 2012, 4:07pm Another solid NOVA effort exploring the science behind the puzzling 400-foot high, 3.5-mile Dry Falls in central Washington and how it came to be. It takes a while to suss out the full story, as the video takes its time with historical reenactments, contemporary interviews, and some of the sensationalized video production we've come to expect when revealing "secrets" and "mysteries" on film - spooky video effects and dramatic music leading up to the mind-blowing truth Soon To Be Revealed! And that mind-blowing truth - that all this peculiar geology was caused by the catastrophic collapse of an enormous ice-dam holding back the waters of the once-massive Glacier Lake Missoula 1,000 miles away - is just mind-blowing enough you'll happily sit through the animated sequence depicting the collapse of the damn several times.

Fascinating! submitted by ValerieL on June 18, 2016, 10:57am This is a great video. I'm fascinated with geological events such as the one talked about in this video, so I've actually seen this a few times now. It takes you back in time to discover what made the Channeled Scablands in eastern and central Washington. It goes along a little slowly at first as they talk about the speculation behind what had happened and how the other scientists reacted when the one speculated that perhaps a flood had caused the damage. Then, using animated graphics, they show you how he was right, except that it wasn't just one flood, it was several.

Anyone interested in geology would find this interesting. It's a NOVA program, so it's only about an hour long, meaning it's not too long for older elementary students and up. Younger children may find it difficult to sit through. Since it IS a NOVA program, it also comes with the high standard of quality that other NOVA programs come with. I highly recommend it!
