COMMUNITY REVIEWS

Anger, rage, excitement, sorrow and joy submitted by Tiffany Cole on January 2, 2008, 7:52pm Wow! This book was really hard to read! Being an african american myself, I felt anger, rage, excitement, sorrow, and joy throughtout this book! The book was hard to read because slavery was so cruel! The book was even harder to read when I found out that the book was actually based on a actual day in history. After reading the entire book, I must say that it was worth it! There were times when I wanted to throw the book away, I'm glad that I didn't! Something that I really liked was how Julius Lester wrote not just how one person felt. He wrote how everyone felt that day, and on!

"Day of Tears" was based on a day in the south when the largest slave auction took place. There are even real facts included in the book! The auction took place because a man was a bad gambler and the only things that he could pay as payment were his slaves. He sold his slaves then repaid everyone that he owed.

I do recommned this book! The truth is hard to read! And some may try to deny what happened, and some may try to blame America's crime and cruelty of someone else. But when it all comes do to it, there is no hiding the truth! This book does a great job telling the truth, however painful it may be!
