Focuses on the year in the life of a group of friends in New York's East Village. The "bohemians" live carefree lives of art, music, sex, and drugs. It is carefree until Mark, an aspiring filmmaker, and Roger, an aspiring songwriter, find out they owe a year's rent to Benny. Benny is a former friend who had promised them free rent when he married the landlord's daughter. Roger has also attracted the attention of his downstairs neighbor, Mimi. Mark's former girlfriend, Maureen, has found a new romance in a lawyer named Joanne. Philosophy professor Tom finds his soul mate in drag queen Angel. With this being the late 1980s, the threat of AIDS is always present.

COMMUNITY REVIEWS

loved it submitted by ColeenT on July 13, 2011, 5:03pm loved it

Great singing submitted by crazypockets on July 16, 2013, 3:27pm Amazing, absolutely spectacular singing all around. Especially from Idina Menzel and Tracie Thoms. And if that's not good enough, this is worth watching if only for Jesse L. Martin's singing in the funeral scene. I dare you to not cry.

Beautiful submitted by ks1287 on July 26, 2013, 8:25pm A really beautiful musical about the struggle of those with HIV/AIDS and the bohemian community in New York City. It includes some spectacular songs, including the iconic "Seasons of Love." There's also some really big names in this film adaption, including Rosario Dawson (Sin City), Jesse L. Martin (Law & Order), and Idina Menzel (original Elphaba in Wicked, Glee).

rent submitted by hcf on July 28, 2014, 10:57am nothing like the play but i still enjoyed it thoroughly

Rent submitted by SBNB on June 25, 2016, 1:03pm I liked it. It's a good story with great music. I honestly thought it would be better than it was, but it was good enough.

RENT submitted by KSB2013 on July 3, 2016, 4:15pm One of the best. A classic with real world issues and truth.

Great film submitted by ekharris on August 6, 2018, 12:04pm Rent is a great film with many of the original cast from the Broadway musical. The cast is full of talented actors and singers.

Rent: submitted by ccrose on August 16, 2019, 2:27pm I think plays are written with the feeling of how it would affect an audience given the boundary of the edge of a stage. Everything has to work with extreme constraints. Even productions filmed from the stage performance don’t convey the importance of the boundary. A moveable camera, too, changes that tension. I just think it looses so much from the living (sweating) actors thumping across the wood stage. Nothing like it.
