Follows "Swoff," a third-generation Marine enlistee, from a sobering stint in boot camp to active duty, sporting a sniper's rifle and a hundred-pound ruck on his back through the Middle East deserts. There is no cover from intolerable heat or from the Iraqi soldiers, who are always potentially just over the next horizon. Swoff and his fellow Marines sustain themselves with sardonic humanity and wicked comedy on blazing desert fields in a country they don't understand, against an enemy they can't see, for a cause they don't fully understand. Sergeant Sykes, a Marine lifer, heads up the scout/sniper platoon, while Troy, Swoff's friend and mentor, is a die-hard member of STA - the elite Marine Unit.

Intriguing submitted by crazypockets on August 11, 2013, 4:40pm I have never been very interested in war or the military, especially in the modern sense. But I went to see this with friends who wanted to see it because of Jake Gyllenhal, and I was pleasantly surprised. That's not to say it's an easy movie to watch, just interesting. It seemed to take a more realistic, unfliching, less glorifying look at the military which I appreciated.

you'll never want to be a Marine after this submitted by 21621031390949 on August 11, 2016, 9:51pm I'm a pacifist, and when my very sensitive teenage daughter said she wanted to join the military, we watched this movie together. One look at boot camp and the craziness of the military's authoritarian structure and my daughter changed her mind.
