Beethoven Celebration in Vienna submitted by vk on January 27, 2011, 11:11am This DVD is the first DVD of the nine-DVD set "Leonard Bernstein: The Concert Collection". This first DVD contains the booklet for the entire nine-DVD set and Disc 1, which has two pieces, circa 1970.

The first piece, "Bernstein on Beethoven: A Celebration in Vienna", is a documentary portrait of Ludwig van Beethoven, masterfully prepared and narrated by Leonard Bernstein for the anniversary of Beethoven's 200th birthday in 1970. It is delightfully punctuated with excerpts from Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 1 in C Major, with rehearsal and performance scenes from Fidelio, and with excerpts from the "Ode to Joy" of the Ninth Symphony.

The second piece, "Bernstein in Vienna: Beethoven Piano Concerto No. 1 in C Major", is performed by Leonard Bernstein and the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra at the Musikverein in 1970, with Leonard Bernstein conducting from the piano bench -- just as pianist/composer Beethoven himself did at the Musikverein before he became deaf.
