Better than most superhero stuff, but still bad. submitted by eknapp on December 14, 2012, 9:42am Some stretchy superhero's wife is murdered. This is scary and disconcerting because her place is jampacked with KRYPTONIAN security technology! Then a shrinky hero's ex-wife gets attacked, and Robin's dad takes a boomerang, repeat, boomerang, to the aorta. It's all very tragic and tense, I guess. Mysterious.

I don't think I'm the target audience, there were non-stop references to weird stuff that I was seemingly supposed to know already. The green Robin Hood apparently died, unless that was a euphemism for something. Superman too. This was a bit of a stumbling block.

I picked this up because it's supposed to be a very serious, quality take on the DC universe. And I did find it to be slightly less silly than anticipated; the writing is better than I'd expected. But if this is as good as it gets, this will be my last book with Batman or Flash. I'm done.

(Big Bang Theory and Angry Birds suck too. I'm a BSG/Skyrim/The Boys kind of gal.)

Better than most superhero stuff and still awesome submitted by Pumpkinscones on July 16, 2013, 5:08pm If you fall into the above reviewers mindset of 'superheroes are silly but I'm going to give them a try because I love Big Bang Theory' then go away, read some other stuff first and then have a go. If you still don't like it, put your Old Navy 'Nerd' t-shirt back on and go and be a serious gamer playing Angry Birds and Candy Crush.

If you appreciate great writing then just pick it up and read it - it might help if you have a basic understanding of the DC universe, but I think most people should be able to at least appreciate the story.

If you are a fan of DC then you should have read this already.

This story offers answers to some of the biggest problems people have with comic books - how do they keep their identity secret?, how do they protect their loved ones? how do they keep from murdering each other with such different idealogies?
Make no mistake however that this is not a golden age book - it deals with murder and rape and is a a 'serious quality take on the DC universe'

This is how you get a novel reader to start on comics books. submitted by valjean on August 27, 2018, 1:20am You can tell Brad Meltzer is not a 'comic book writer' but just a 'writer'. He really nails making this book appeal to nearly all audiences. He pleases the comic book fan with references to character's history, while making it accessible to someone new to comic books. Everything you need to know is self-contained within the book. If you, or someone you know, enjoys drama or thriller or murder mystery novels, this is the thing to give them to suck them into the world of comic book fandom!
