Katherine of Aragon
submitted by Jen Chapin-Smith on July 28, 2013, 9:03pm
Philippa Gregory begins the story of the Tudors (if one reads them chronologically) with "The Constant Princess" about Katherine of Aragon, best known as the first wife of English King Henry VIII. The story begins with Catherine watching her parents, Isabelle and Ferdinand of Spain, conquer the country. Catherine was first married to King Henry VII's oldest son, Arthur. After his death, she married Henry, who later became king. Gregory portrays Katherine and Arthur as having been in love, although Katherine maintained that she was a virgin when she married Henry. Gregory believes Katherine lied, although historians do not agree on that point.
The novel is very interesting and, like her other novels, is a great way to learn about British history. Her other novels follow the lives of three of Henry's other wives. I recommend all of them.

Interesting story of Queen Katherine, focusing on her early life. Quick read. If you like historical fiction, especially about royalty, you will like it.
Makes you realize how little control women had over their lives at that time in certain societies, no matter the wealth or position.
