Iconic Americana submitted by Meginator on July 3, 2020, 2:04pm Aaron Copland’s most iconic works are so familiar that it can be difficult to remember that they are subject to a nearly infinite number of tiny interpretations every time they are performed. It’s very interesting to listen to Copland as envisioned by the composer, and I found some of the interpretive variations genuinely surprising, placing his music in a different context and affecting how I’ll listen to other recordings of his work. As for the music itself, Copland wears his influences directly on his sleeve, constantly recalling aspects of North American folk music both literally and figuratively. The music is emotionally evocative and often lively, and it’s an accessible introduction to orchestral music that will resonate with listeners from within and outside of the orchestra world.
