COMMUNITY REVIEWS

Liked it submitted by crazypockets on July 13, 2013, 12:56pm This is a completely cheesy action movie, but I still liked it. Antonio Banderas is great, and I could listen to Anthony Hopkins read the phone book, so I loved him in this too. Good action scenes, and some great trick-riding.

Welsh domination! submitted by willow on August 28, 2015, 5:26pm Both Anthony Hopkins and Catherine Zeta-Jones are Welsh actors playing Mexican characters.

A Modern Swashbuckler submitted by Meginator on August 24, 2020, 6:16pm This film blends the core elements of classic swashbucklers and westerns and places them into a plot with an appealing modern sensibility. The story makes a number of allusions to real Mexican (and Californian) history and feels generally believable, with Zorro acting as a folk hero where institutions have failed the people. Some of this, of course, is wishful thinking, but given that the film broadly follows a superhero origin arc it fits with the genre. Antonio Banderas and Anthony Hopkins have excellent chemistry, making a sometimes strained mentoring relationship completely believable and giving the film an emotional core beyond its love story. Catherine Zeta-Jones does well in her role, though her character is written very much in the faux-feminism mold that gives her just enough agency at a crucial moment to gloss over the fact that she primarily exists as something for the men to fight over and use as leverage against one another. Still, the action sequences are fantastic and the story has an nice focus on honor that stands in stark (and very welcome) contrast to typical violent-for-violence’s-sake action films. The film isn’t perfect (it bears mentioning that none of the leads are, as far as I can tell, of Mexican descent), but it holds up really well as an unusually thoughtful action movie that delivers on multiple levels.
