BRIGHT SIZE LIVING
submitted by mellonir on January 18, 2012, 7:23pm
Guitarist Pat Metheny's first release is arguably one of the best jazz albums ever. Set in a simplistic (simplistic for the electric and flamboyant mid-1970s) power trio configuation consisting of Metheny and good friends Jaco Pastorius on electric bass and Bob Moses on drums, Bright Size Life offers jazz conversation rarely heard then or today.
This title is a must-have in the collection of any musician or music fan.
Stripped Down By His Standards submitted by Meginator on August 24, 2020, 8:36pm Being familiar with some of Pat Metheny’s later music, I was surprised that this album felt so stripped down, emphasizing the guitar, bass, and drums in equal measure and celebrating the music without incorporating additional bells and whistles. Each member of the ensemble is an outstanding performer and each track comes together seamlessly, weaving a soothing spell that nonetheless feels like Metheny (perhaps because of the somewhat unusual emphasis on electric guitar). The songs leave plenty of room for experimentation and allow the performers to explore, but it all comes around in the end, making for a well balanced and now classic instrumental jazz album.
