COMMUNITY REVIEWS

A dark and powerful story of teenage alienation. submitted by eknapp on November 2, 2012, 11:08am Life at a 70s Seattle high school is marked by a new sexually transmitted disease which causes grotesque, but otherwise benign, deformities. The lucky ones can hide the changes and pass as normal, but most of those who have "the bug" are ostracized, their lives changed forever. Black Hole is told from several points of view, but always that of a teenager and always a victim of the bug. There is virtually no adult perspective at all.

High school alienation is the predominant theme, but change is pretty important too. Wherever the infection goes, a great uprooting follows. There are no after-school-special lessons. No one finds peace or carves out a place in society; every story ends with shattered dreams, running away, living an outcast lifestyle, or worse. Well, there is one couple with hopes and dreams at the end, but even that is accompanied by a powerful sense that it can't last. A hopeless story if ever there was one. Powerful stuff.
