COMMUNITY REVIEWS

my favorite REM album submitted by adimarzo on June 18, 2013, 9:38am This is by far my favorite REM album, and one of my top 10 albums. Nightswimming is simply perfection and Find the River and Sweetness Follows are also excellent.

The band at its peak submitted by A2Doug2 on July 7, 2014, 2:07pm This is my favorite R.E.M. album. After their previous album "Out Of Time" brought them their first No.1 single, the band took an artistically bold left-turn and mixed a couple straight-up rock tunes with orchestrations, percussion-less ballads, and haunting melancholy. A must-have.

Automatic For The People submitted by Fevvers - STAR473 on August 20, 2015, 1:03am An R.E.M. classic. "Drive" is dark and moody. "Nightswimming" is pure delight with its specific imagery and gentle instrumentals. It's great (though not perfectly smooth, but maybe that's deliberate) the way it hangs together as an album.

It's the Classic submitted by timdufresne on July 13, 2018, 10:34pm A dramatic departure that became a classic!

A turning point submitted by Richard Lee Pierre on August 18, 2019, 10:11am I disagree that this is one of REM’s best, but it’s still very good. I’d rate it somewhere 6-10 in their top 10. Being an REM album, it’s still very very strong work and definitely a popular one.

Has some Gems submitted by jibkidder on July 23, 2022, 8:07pm Later REM kind of always suffered from being over-produced - after Green they lost some of their early energy, though I think that is more from the recording than the playing. I think it's predecessor, "Out of Time" was a lesser effort, so it's nice to see them come back a bit on this record. Still, their greatest strength is Stipe's lyrical je-ne-sais-quois. "Drive" and "Nightswimming" are great songs.
