COMMUNITY REVIEWS
Pass it on! submitted by teri on August 11, 2016, 8:44am Along with being a wonderful story (with the good and the bad), this book presents a taste of Anishinabemowin - the language of Great Lakes Indians. With a glossary, it's easy to pick up words that can be passed on to children - especially important for those of us with a Native American background, who may wish to preserve part of our culture!

The Birchbark series, by Louise Erdrich, has been described as a Little House on the Prairie of Native Americans. This is the 2nd book in the series, and follows the events as 9-year-old Omakayas' family prepares to leave their homeland because of white settlers.
Erdrich's books are great introductions to Native American life in the colonial era for young children (and adults, if they need an introduction). Her frequent use of Ojibwe words and phrases, and details of typical life and customs enrich without overwhelming a timeless coming-of-age story. Kids will relate to some of her struggles - a pesky younger brother, a sometimes distant father, her anxieties about her place in the world - while learning about a very different time and culture.
