"Stone Soup" like tale, set in Kenya
submitted by willow on April 24, 2017, 7:01am
This book, set in rural Kenya, features a young boy and his mother on market day. Mama Panya (which, incidentally, means Mama Rat -- reason not given) is trying to stretch her money, while her son is busy inviting everyone for dinner. Instead of being a disaster, all goes well and the characters have a wonderful potluck meal.
As an aside, despite its inclusion on a list of Muslim characters, the characters in this book are not obviously Muslim. In fact, the majority of Kenyans are Christian aside from several ethnic groups; the cultural stylings of Adika and his environs do not suggest this at all. So anyone looking for inspiring Muslim characters will be disappointed. It is a nice book about generosity, applicable to most any reader.
