Semi-staged Candide -- recorded live May 2004 submitted by vk on March 5, 2011, 8:07pm This Lonny Price version of Leonard Bernstein's Candide was recorded live in a first-night semi-staged concert performance at the Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts in 2004. The sound was quite good for a live recording and the camera work great with only a few live flaws. The cast was brilliant with Kristin Chenoweth as the ravishing Cunegonde, Patti LuPone as the savvy Old Lady, and most importantly Paul Groves as the innocent Candide. To me, Paul Groves is the best tenor I have heard singing this part. The greatest flaw in this operetta may be its libretto; despite the many talented people working it over, it still comes across at best as a "schoolboy prank" (apologies to Voltaire). In this Lonny Price version, the operetta ends quite abruptly with the finale. In comparison, Bernstein's Final Revised Version 1989 [DVD 782.1 BE] makes a smoother transition to the grand finale.
