Good story, weak characters, weird conventions... submitted by Juliettie on July 18, 2013, 4:35pm The plot of the book drew me in...Boston, flu epidemic, scandal about product development and intellectual property. Good stuff. Sadly, the weird convention of margin notes used by the author is really distracting. Rather than working in other characters' thoughts, historical information, etc. into a seamless narrative, the author just sort of sticks them out in the margins. I kept either skipping them or feeling pulled out of the story to read them...and sometimes they're essential to understanding the plot, so I felt I couldn't just ignore them. It felt like a really lazy technique, honestly. I also really wanted to feel more compassion for the protagonist, but she's kind of flat. Glad I read it, interesting, plot-driven novel, but not entirely satisfying.
