Originally released as a motion picture in 1929.
Dziga Vertov's Man with a movie camera is considered one of the most innovative and influential films of the silent era. This dawn-to-dusk view of the Soviet Union offers a montage of urban Russian life, showing the people of the city at work and at play, and the machines that endlessly whirl to keep the metropolis alive.

COMMUNITY REVIEWS

Very Interesting. submitted by Tassos on December 26, 2018, 1:29pm I enjoyed watching this documentary. Even though I had read a lot about the period, it is different when you have an actual documentary of ordinary people living their daily lives.

Life-Changing submitted by annawhitney on August 17, 2023, 10:15am This film holds such an important place in history. We may not realize it when we watch today, but many of the techniques that are essential to film today were literally invented by Vertov for this movie and others--things like slow motion, tracking shots, and freeze frames. This movie isn't sad by any means, but I wept like a baby when I watched it. I was taken away by man's ability to create new ways of communicating the human experience. I think that's what the human experience is all about.
