Statement of Purpose submitted by jibkidder on June 24, 2022, 7:52am Jane's addiction were, for a few short years, the most unusual and interesting major label rock band. I'm not sure what brought an end to their brief spell of magic, although I'd have to assume drugs and egos took a toll - I guess I've heard it was ego moves by Perry that brought the end about. It's no shock that both Perry and Dave Navarro have had a least one reality show, Dave's on tattoos, Perry's on the wives of rockstars, but less people are probably aware that the compositional mind behind the band was actually bassist Eric Avery - almost all the songs on their important albums were written by him before the band formed, which reinforces an idea I got from thinking about the Beatles which is that when you get the smartest player in a group behind the bass guitar you have the possibility of the whole thing really congealing. As far as the like alternative rock cannon goes, Jane's was as ethereal as the Cocteau Twins, much better at writing with political intent than, say, Pearl Jam, far superior at marrying heaviness, intelligence and emotional intensity than Tool. These songs are about things and yet, they are still poetic.
