Clever Mulan proves her worth outside of her tradition-bound society when, diguised as the male soldier, "Ping", she bravely takes her father's place in the Imperial Army. Helped by her funny guardian dragon Mushu and a lucky cricket named Cri-kee, Mulan strives to earn the respect of her fellow warriors and her courageous Captain Shang. Mulan's adventures lead to a climatic battle atop the Imperial Palace, where her family's honor and the fate of the Emperor and all of China rests in her hands.

I appreciate what they were doing, but I think in some ways the fact that they were so over the top about pointing it out almost detracted from the story. In any case, I think it's good to have a variety of female characters for young girls to look to, Eddie Murphy had some funny quips in here, and the music was pretty good.

She sacrifices everything to help her family, kicks butt, and doesn't take crap from anyone. The story of her hidden identity is also an important detail; she did all of that despite "not being allowed to."

Great Even by Disney's Standards submitted by Meginator on August 6, 2017, 1:34pm Mulan is one of the better films to come out of the excellent run of animated films Disney had from the late 1980s to the late 1990s, and Mulan is one of the first Disney princesses to enjoy any real agency in her own story. Mulan is brave and noble but also suffers from the kind of doubt that many viewers will relate to; Disney doesn't go overboard in making her perfect and the result is a wonderful role model. Mushu is a wonderfully done comic sidekick, as well, and hits the right combination of silliness and support for the hero. The animation, too, is gorgeous. Mulan is a fantastic film and has aged incredibly well since its initial release.

It treats its source material with genuine respect, and Mulan is a strong female character who gets to make her own choices and face the consequences. The movie lacks the catchy tunes and snappy humor of "Aladdin" and the romance of "Beauty and the Beast", but it's solidly entertaining.
