Harry Dresden, Chicago's preeminent wizard is coping with his new roommate--vampire half-brother Thomas. Harry soon has problems bigger than Thomas' clutter to deal with. Marva, one of Harry's vampire foes, summons him with a threat to his police-lieutenant friend, Karrin Murphy. Marva demands Harry get the Word of Kemmler for her, or she'll frame Murphy for murder. Harry doesn't even know what the Word is, but while he's trying to find out, and also what damage Marva will be able to do with it, several necromancers descend on Chicago. When Harry learns that the newcomers are students of Kemmler, an evil wizard who mastered ancient spirits in a way no one has since, he discovers that they are seeking the Word, too, in hopes of seizing the powerful knowledge within it and calling forth a powerful creature known as the Erlking.

A must read submitted by sobchik on March 25, 2007, 8:45pm With snappy dialog and plenty of action to keep you on the edge of your
seat, this whole series is a great read.

My first Dresden file submitted by Joe on July 11, 2011, 9:32am So I was a little late to the party but this is the first book I read in this series. It sucked me in right away. It is fast paced and I found it a fast read like the rest of the books in the series. I really enjoy how the author weaves a good mystery plot with an ever expanding fantasy world, but it steeped enough in reality to be believable. That is the real gift this author seems to possess. Also after reading many of the books I am emotionally attached to the characters.

The best in this good series yet! submitted by Yitian on June 20, 2017, 12:02pm I love the Dresden Files series. It's magical, entertaining, savvy, full of action and wonder. But this particular book is the BEST in this series yet! I don't want to give away too much of the plot, but I will say that I had to stop reading to bust out laughing several times. If you are not sure if this series is for you, start with this book and then decide.

Best book in the series. submitted by Edigaet1 on July 28, 2019, 9:36pm This is by far my favorite book in 'The Dresden Files' series. So much sass. A huge come-from-behind win. AND Dresden riding an animated T-Rex skeleton into battle? How can anyone say no?

My favorite Dresden Files so far submitted by pamhockey25 on August 13, 2021, 11:30am I really loved the fast pace of this book, the seventh installment of the Dresden Files! The medical examiner, Butters, plays a big and fun part of this story. Harry is protecting his friend, officer Karrin Murphy who is mostly off screen in this book. Set at Halloween, I really enjoyed the role Sue the T. Rex from the Field Museum in Chicago plays. If you want to know why polka will never die, this is the book for you.
