COMMUNITY REVIEWS

Cloud Atlas submitted by raymondw on January 3, 2011, 6:03pm This is an amazing, brilliantly written book. It is especially intriguing on CD. Each of the 6 voices ends abruptly but returns later to complete the story. Ingenious and exciting use of language and structure.

interesting and unexpected, text versus audio submitted by nemiller on June 9, 2023, 7:22pm I read Cloud Atlas about ten years ago as text, and more recently as an audiobook. I think they each have their advantages. I found it hard to follow the earlier chapters with the audiobook. I often had to listen to those chapters twice to both understand what was happening and appreciate the writing. Readers more used to complex prose might not have that problem, though. And on the other hand, I found the middle chapters FAR more enjoyable with the audiobook.

This book is not going to be everyone's cup of tea. One of the characters can fall into the "white savior" cliche, which I found pretty annoying. You also need a certain amount of tolerance for unlikable characters. Some readers will find the chapters with Cavendish very funny, and others will just be too annoyed by him to enjoy the story. Personally, I fell somewhere in between. Other parts of the book, though, were so fantastic, to me they outweighed any flaws.

Go in without knowing too much (or anything) about this book. It might not be what you're used to, but give it a try. You just might find yourself falling deeply into the story, and letting this book leave a permanent mark on your psyche. And that mark may be shaped curiously like a comet.
