There's a good story in here, be patient submitted by mowjac on July 10, 2018, 11:07am This is the third in a loosely linked series and it is a predecessor to "The curse of Chalion" and "Paladin of Souls". There's a lot less dialogue, fewer characters and more internal focus as Bujold strives to describe the internal reckoning of oneself with outcast soul parts that need to be reclaimed. Like the other two in this series, it is a story within the story of how one leads a spiritual life. In this one, however, she doesn't balance those two themes as well as in the other two books.

meh submitted by ack on August 1, 2020, 7:48pm I just... didn't love this book. I wanted to! I tried to! But it just wasn't for me. First off, this probably wasn't the best book to begin reading for an introduction to Bujold. I felt like I was dropped into a world I didn't understand. Everyone said it was stand-alone, but apparently it wasn't stand-alone-enough.

Even without the confusion of a world I didn't totally understand, there were a few other things about this book that I got really annoyed with. First, except for a few great sections, the intrigue in this book felt like it was intriguing only because the author didn't actually give enough details for the reader to understand. The characters kept wondering about things that didn't quite make sense - I reread several sections to try to find what I was missing; I'm pretty sure I wasn't missing anything, and that the main character was just left wondering so the reader would know that deep happenings were about.

And then there was the weird romance without any actual interaction between characters. What was that? Relationships between characters: often cute, especially when they actually have talked more than 5 times. Total times Ijada and Ingrey talk to each other: about 5 times, at least in the narrative of the book. It just felt forced and unnecessary.

I did finish the book, mostly because a) everyone loves Bujold and I felt bad for not getting through at least one of her books and b) the writing is amazing. And, while the middle drags a little as the web of fate gets aligned and capital-M Mysteries are uncovered, the beginning and end are amazing. The finale is moving, and the supporting characters are hilarious. I just wish that the good parts had been the majority of my experience.

Not her best. Don’t start with this as an introduction to the author submitted by Kitty4777 on August 4, 2023, 1:07am Loved the other series she’s done. This is the first in this series, however, it’s just OK. I’m excited for what is to come! On to the next book!
