A Spiritual and Symbolic Journey submitted by deets on July 10, 2013, 11:53am The Mermaid Chair is a story of pain, loss, and secrets. It is also a story of how the human mind and heart reach for the spiritual in their quest for purpose in life. The main story takes place on Egret Island,a boundary island off the coast of South Carolina - a small island mostly known by tourists for the Benedictine monastery and the mysterious "Mermaid Chair". Jessie, now a middle aged woman whose only daughter has left for college, and for whom the island has held heartache for too long, returns to her mother's home after she has maimed herself in an inexplicable act. The time she spends attempting to heal her mother becomes as much about healing her past, and with it, deciding her future.

I highly recommend this book, but it is by no means a "happy" read.
