COMMUNITY REVIEWS

Lost Ann Arbor submitted by doctorfang on August 2, 2014, 5:39pm This book is a fascinating glimpse at buildings that once stood in Ann Arbor, but are no more. In some ways, it's heartbreaking, because so many lovely buildings have been razed, invariably replaced by something less attractive. (The book shows before-and-after images of many of the sites.)

Certainly an interesting read, to see the history of Ann Arbor that can no longer be seen on our streets.

A Window into Our Past submitted by Meginator on August 21, 2021, 9:23am This slim volume delivers a lovely dose of nostalgia via photographs (and, less frequently, engravings or other artistic renderings) of demolished buildings that once graced Ann Arbor’s streets. The book’s scope is limited primarily to the modern downtown and central campus districts, which makes sense given that many of the buildings in question date to the 1800s, and Wineberg provides carefully researched captions beside each photograph; humorously, many of these notes are already outdated only 15 or so years after this book’s publication. It’s fascinating to watch the city’s growth and change over time, as reflected by its buildings, and this book does double duty as a collection of architectural documentation and as an outline of the city’s history. Overall, these images offer an excellent window into Ann Arbor’s past and a gentle (if perhaps unintended) reminder that nothing is as constant in urban development as change.
