very good submitted by unknown on August 2, 2013, 9:33pm When I got this book, I had already read Inkheart and The Thief Lord and was hoping Ms. Funke wouldn't let me down. Well, she didn't! This book is very likeable and a fun fantasy read. Though, as previously mentioned by another reviewer, it isn't as serious as her other works, but more light-hearted. I really enjoyed it, and thought that the author did a good job of putting a clever spin on over-familiarized mystical beasts. Not to mention I was sad when it ended, and that's always a good sign! It's a little slow getting started, but is hardly a drawback at all. Recommended!

dramatic reading submitted by camelsamba on August 24, 2015, 10:06pm Brendan Fraser is fun as the narrator for this book, because he does various sound effects that probably aren't in the book but add considerably to the story. If you don't like that kind of 'dramatization' and prefer a straight reading, you might not enjoy this book on CD.

The basic plot is friends on a quest. But the friends are an assortment of humans and magical creatures, and the quest requires them to travel over land and sea and encounter many more beings - both fabulous* and mundane, some out to get them and some willing to help. A few of the characters are rather one-dimensional, but the overall story is quite entrancing. The whole family enjoyed it.

[the definition of fabulous includes:
3. told about in fables; purely imaginary
4. known about only through myths or legends]

Excellent for kids and adults submitted by Amber Bowman on June 16, 2018, 11:23pm I borrowed Dragon Rider on a friend's recommendation for something for my child to listen to while we are in the car. It wasn't long before I was hooked on it, too! We both fell in love with the characters and the reading by Brendan Fraser is excellent. I had no idea he could do so many voices and accents. When we finished, we started over again!
