COMMUNITY REVIEWS

Notoriety or friendship? submitted by FordAlpha on June 27, 2018, 10:17pm I read a lot of Bill Peet books growing up, and I enjoy reading them to my kids now--although I confess that their length often exceeds my read-aloud energy. Concise they are not. Anyway, "The Whingdingdilly" was one of my favorites then, and it's one of my kids' favorites now. Despite the affection of his boy companion, a farm dog grows bored of his drab life, longing for the notoriety and admiration enjoyed by the champion horse across the road. He runs away from home, meets a witch who reads his thoughts and transforms him into an unforgettable chimeric beast, and learns that notoriety and the admiration of crowds are a pale substitute for true friendship. The length of the text is my only complaint, and it's ameliorated by amusing moments like the witch relaxing on a train ride to Massachusetts, munching on sugar cookies. Bill Peet was a Disney animation artist, and his colored-pencil illustrations are always excellent, particularly the animals' expressions--like the dog's attempt to mimic the champion horse's proud high-stepping gait.

good! submitted by nate murphy on September 4, 2018, 10:09am I like the part where Scamp pretended to be the horse
