Companion to Guns, Germs, and Steel, but looking at collapse vs. rise of societies
submitted by hathaway1066 on July 18, 2014, 3:48pm
Here Jared Diamond looks at a series of different societies that vanished (Maya, Easter Islanders, Anasazi, etc.) and presents and discusses evidence that they failed to limit their population to the size that their lands' resources could support. Sometimes long term changes in climate caused a shift so that less was available in terms of food, etc. and the societies then collapsed.
A powerful cautionary tale for our own era.
