COMMUNITY REVIEWS

great for intended audience submitted by camelsamba on July 10, 2014, 7:47pm My 13yo son loved this book and the 10yo wanted to know if there were "more books in this series" because he wanted to learn more about the characters. This is the same child who didn't want me to read it at first, but was willing to give it a try for a chapter or two.

I'm not sure why I didn't enjoy it. I guess it's realistic in that everyone is slightly annoying and doesn't quite understand each other. The chapters in this book alternate between the point of view of various main characters - mostly Wallace Wallace (football player) and Rachel (drama club president), but also a few more. Wallace is known for never telling a lie, which doesn't always endear him to others (especially those who don't know about his penchant for complete truth, such as Rachel or the new-to-the-school teacher). Most of the conflicts are tied up neatly in the end, but you're not always sure who to like. It really bothered me how everyone was so quick to blame Wallace for things going wrong without even examining the evidence. It also bothered me that the teacher was unwilling to entertain Wallace's alternate views on the book Old Shep, My Pal. Let's face it, that first book report did contain all the elements students were told to include, even if it was slapdash. It seemed like the teacher was just being vindictive because he didn't like Wallace's opinion.
