Excellent series submitted by Susan4Pax -prev. sueij- on June 21, 2014, 8:54pm The only thing better than finding a great book is finding a great series, and the only thing better than finding a great series is finding out that somehow you missed it, and the whole thing is already written and you won't have to wait for any of the next installments to come out!

Ahhhhhh... perfection.

This is an outstanding beginning to a wonderful fantasy series that is six books long, already complete (how did we miss it?!?)... creative world, interesting characters, logical development, engrossing story. It pulls on familiar tropes (but seriously, doesn't everything but Tolkien and Sanderson?) but in wonderful ways.

My only minor gripe is that (at least in the first half of the story) there were numerous places where information was relayed via narration rather than action or dialogue, when it could have *easily* been otherwise. But either I got used to it, or it lessened after Butcher got us set into the world. Compared to the fun of the story, however, it was really minor, and I'm looking forward to the rest of the six... already owned and on my shelf

First in Series submitted by kathscot on July 28, 2017, 12:04pm Like sueij I didn't find this series until it had all been written - and then I devoured it!
Supposedly Butcher wrote it after being challenged to write on a "lame idea." He took two - lost legion and Pokemon and the result is very entertaining.

Yes! One of the best series out there! submitted by Kikumatsu97 on June 14, 2019, 9:25pm Jim Butcher's unique approach to fantasy really hooked me from book one and kept me wanting more every single time I closed the back cover on on of the series's books! The audiobooks are also really great, read by Kate Reading and it's all done magnificently well!

Richly curated characters and races meet an awesome elemental magic system in the first book, The Furies of Calderon.

We meet Tavi the young boy, still trying to find his legs in a society of humans who have the ability to manipulate the elements of the world (water, air, earth, wind, wood etc) where he does not! that's right! the main character in this story does not wield the power of the magic system. It's a great underdog story from the start as we meet the people of Calderon, begin to understand he political stance of the people in power, the monarchy and the wars that lie ahead!

I wish I could read these all from the beginning with fresh eyes! May even re-read just because.

I love Kitai, the Marat girl - she is in my top 5 favorite characters of the story because she's capable and snarky and witty.

I definitely recommend this entire series because it's not hurried or calculated seeming in anyway, it has such a natural progression, and genuine surprises! Happy Reading!

A Great Start! submitted by stephaniepocsimorrison on June 15, 2020, 7:17pm This was a great start to a series and really pulled me into the world that Butcher has created here. I am excited to discover the rest of the series and learn more about this surprising and wonderful world!
