Page-turner at first, contemplative later
I wish reviews of the book had not given away its premise before I could read it, because what I enjoyed most was piecing together the mystery of who the students are and where they come from. The first half of the book was riveting, and I couldn’t put it down. The second half of the book was not nearly as much of a page-turner to me. This story is sort of about love among captives. I wanted the author to focus on questions of freedom and human rights. The author wanted to focus on love and mortality.
Never Let Me Go is a powerful book in a quiet sort of way, but don’t expect it to be more than tangentially related to science-fiction.
