Free, a new life. They came to the US to find a place that would leave them alone.
Meryl Streep plays a young woman who survived. But the first introduction shows a shy, smiling woman who barely speaks English. Living in Brooklyn, she’s dressed in cotton summer clothes, clean, neat, her hair worn in a bun, old fashioned by 1947 standards.
Her boyfriend is passive but pleasant. They met there, neither have family to look for.
The unraveling of their past comes slowly, reluctantly, very careful not to say anything that would give away what they’ve seen.
It’s that opening that sets you up to never expect what depth of pain they both carry every day.
It’s a movie to see, just to understand what a survivor may carry unspoken.
A tragic end,.
Her problems are small, learning English.
