COMMUNITY REVIEWS

Fascinating submitted by pkooger on March 3, 2010, 2:43pm I kept this book on my shelf for about six months but could never quite bring myself to bite the bullet and start reading it. One day I picked it up, flipped to a random page and started skimming. I was immediately drawn in and started from the beginning. I finished it in less than a week. This book is 400+ pages. Obama's life has been fascinating and this book doesn't even get into the last decade or two. He makes some great observations about history, family, race, and community in general. He tends to get a little melodramatic sometimes, but if I had lived his life I would too. Plus, a little hyperbole never hurt a book in terms of readability. I especially liked his descriptions of the mixed-up international web of people that constitutes his family. Many of us can relate to families like that, although I suspect few of us have traveled the globe in search of a deeper understanding of ourselves and our history.

#44 submitted by crp on August 6, 2019, 12:07am Barack Obama, your leadership is missed; Reading this really helped shape my understanding of his story and the material others used against him to try to attack him (sadly).

A Good Read submitted by betsywil on August 8, 2019, 2:22pm His first book, this memoir of his early life tells his own story in the context of a complex racial & social tapestry. Beautiful storytelling.

Narcissistic submitted by gracekil on August 14, 2019, 1:31pm Now, I'm a fan of Obama as our President, but I found reading this book to be slooowwww and the narration sounded so very narcissistic.

Young Obama submitted by DBogie on June 17, 2020, 6:56pm Everything we learn about Obama shows how he is a great a man.

Beautiful Storytelling submitted by emroon on August 5, 2022, 12:32pm Through beautiful storytelling Barack Obama tells the story of his family and growing up. It includes reflections on race and politics and family in America.
