God has abandoned Heaven. It's 1985 and the Reagans are in the White House. Death is swinging the scythe of AIDS. In Manhattan, Prior tells Lou, his lover, he's ill and Lou decides to bolt. As disease and loneliness ravage Prior, guilt invades Lou. Joe is an attorney, who is Mormon and Republican, is pushed by right-winger Roy toward a job at the Justice Dept. Both Joe and Roy are in the closet: Joe out of shame and religious turmoil; Roy to preserve his power and access. An angel invites Prior to be a prophet in death. Joe's mother and Belize, a close friend, help Prior choose.
DVD, Region 1, widescreen (1.78:1) presentation; Dolby Digital 5.1 surround, Dolby Digital 2.0 surround.

COMMUNITY REVIEWS

A major work for the gay community. submitted by lisa on July 18, 2019, 4:13pm Well done. Surreal. Surreal for a surreal time.

A most amazing combination of symbol and real submitted by ccrose on August 31, 2019, 11:38am This work just knocked me over, first for that thin line it tread between stark realism and the twinning of metaphor and symbol. It’s 1985 and across the country, ordinary heterosexual people are suddenly losing young gay friends.
It was so mysterious. Given to urban legends I still watch this two disc play made into movie and enjoy the peculiar ways the story unfolds, each differently depending on acceptance or lack thereof.
The acting style and tone fits first the men who love each other (or don’t love anyone as in case of Roy Cohen, hateful attorney). Then the families who don’t get it, hate it, and ever so slowly understand their loved one is dying. Period. The truth: a disease that killed everybody who got it.
The movie goes a bit slowly, the going to Heaven part, prolonging the moment when we’re going to see Prior dead.
But an angel, nurse watches Cohen die, and takes his huge cache of serum that will prolong Prior’s life.
Emma Thompson plays a dual role and pulls off the screaming Angel that busts through Prior’s hospital room ceiling to offer him a chance to be a prophet.
It’s A bouncy ride between real moments of blood and pain to moments when Ethel Rosenberg comes from the grave to gloat that Roy Cohen is gonna die.
Just hang on. It’s an important ride.
