Highly recommended submitted by ashflowtuff on July 13, 2011, 7:47am This is an excellent book. The story is fascinatingly realistic and frightening. I highly recommend it to everyone.
Slow burn, good build submitted by tcramer318 on July 28, 2023, 7:20am This book was published in 2004 and felt prescient. The slower build felt more realistic to me, like it's not that Lindbergh is elected and everything turns up to an 11 overnight. Rather, he makes a statement or the administration enacts a policy and the Jewish community of Newark reacts, then sees that it isn't as bad as in Germany, and this creates the fear, uncertainty, and conflict that I've felt since roughly 2017. The slower buildup makes the climax and resolution more satisfying. I found myself identifying most with Philip's father. Overall, this book has me interested in the HBO series as well as the 1935 Sinclair Lewis novel "It Can't Happen Here".
